'The Lamproom Daily' - Day 127 - In 2016 we remembered The Oaks Mining Disaster at The Lamproom

The Oaks Colliery was situated just outside Barnsley. The explosions that occurred on the 12th and 13th of December resulted in the death of 361 men and boys. At the time it was the world’s worst mining disaster, and for nearly half a century was the worst in Britain. The Oaks Disaster remains England’s worst mining disaster to this day.

The afternoon comprised of two plays -  a play by Sarah Osborne, performed by The Yew Tree Theatre Group from Wakefield, called ‘Remembering The Oaks’, followed by a one-man play – ‘Undermined’ by Danny Mellor.  ‘Undermined’ – one chair, one pint, one actor, one incredible story – will also be performed at the Edinburgh Festival in August – a chance to see it in Barnsley!

The evening was taken over by musicians - Ray Hearne (well-known local singer), Blackwater (husband and wife singing duo) and Alan Wood (writer of The Oaks Memorial Song).
