‘Godspell’ is based on the Gospel according to Saint Matthew. It was one of the most successful musicals in history. The musical first opened in the Spring of 1971 at an off-Broadway theatre. Between 1971 and 1973 productions opened in Los Angeles, London, Paris, Washington D.C., Toronto, San Fransisco, Melbourne, Sydney, Hamburg and Berlin. Several of the songs, including ‘Day By Day’ became chart hits.
‘Godspell’ tells the story of Jesus and his parables in a light-hearted way, along with some spectacular music. A small cast play Jesus’ followers and disciples and they re-enact the parables through song, dance, comedy and mime. The final scenes denote The Last Supper and his crucifixion, which takes place in a junkyard.
